1995 John Doe found shot in Weld County, still unidentified

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — After nearly 30 years, a man shot and found in a shallow grave in Weld County still remains unidentified, but investigators are confident they are getting closer to the identity of the 1995 John Doe.

The remains were discovered by an oil field worker in a field a few miles southeast of Fort Lupton on August 12, 1995, according to an Associated Press report. X-rays showed two bullets lodged in his chest.

“The worker discovered the victim’s tennis shoes sticking out of the ground,” said the AP report on August 15, 1995. Authorities at the time suspected that the skeletal remains had been lying in the field for at least six months.

A pathologist determined the remains belonged to a white or Hispanic male, between the ages of 20 and 25. He was 5’6″ tall and his build was described as heavyset. He had dark brown hair and was wearing black Wrangler jeans, size 29×32, and black Spalding high-top tennis shoes, size 8.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office has referred this case for genetic genealogy, and Cold Case Detective Byron Kastilahn is confident it will yield results.

Monday marks the 29th anniversary of the discovery of John Doe, and the sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about this case to contact Detective Kastilahn at [email protected] or call him at 970-400-2827. You can also send tips to [email protected] or call 970-304-6464.
