The Bookseller – News – Vertebrate celebrates 20 years of outdoor adventure

Sheffield-based independent publisher Vertebrate is celebrating 20 years since the publication of its first title, the Cycling Guide Dark Peak Mountain Bikingwhich was published in August 2004.

The publishing house began as a graphic design agency in 1994 and has now published over 600 books in print and digital form on topics such as mountain hiking, climbing, running, cycling, water sports and nature.

The company was named Small Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards and Specialist Publisher of the Year at the Independent Publishing Awards.

In addition to releasing new titles, Vertebrate has also been making out-of-print classics available in on-demand format since the end of 2016.

“I’ve been publishing books for twenty years and have loved every minute of it. It’s the best feeling to be out on the rocks and trails and meet people with one of our guidebooks in hand and say hello,” said Managing Director Jon Barton. “I can only thank all our authors, readers and our team here for the fun it’s been.”

The publisher has launched a new range of bikepacking books, featuring multi-day off-road cycling tours across England, Scotland and Wales, while the Gravel Rides series focuses on the best unsealed and traffic-free cycling routes in Scotland and the Lake District and Peak District National Parks. A guidebook for the south-west of England will also be released next autumn.
