After eight long years on the waiting list for a season ticket, I was in a meeting one Tuesday night last month when an email popped up on my phone telling me that I had finally secured a ticket to a lifetime of pain, misery, fear and ecstasy.

Yes, my time had come – I was at the top of the waiting list for my first Leeds United season ticket. The club had offered me one at the East Upper about four years ago and I had foolishly turned it down. When I realised I would probably have to wait another four years for another chance, a stranger who overheard this at The Peacock rightly called me a “clown”.
