Eagles News: Philadelphia’s most important rookie

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles Left …

2024 NFL season: A crucial rookie for every team – NFL.com
QUINYON MITCHELL: The Eagles finished second to last in pass defense last season and finished in the bottom five in TD-INT ratio allowed. There will be a lot of pressure on Mitchell to play at a level that exceeds the expectations most rookie cornerbacks have when entering the NFL. The coverage will need to be better if the Eagles hope to make it to the Super Bowl again.

Eagles training camp notes: Isaiah Rodgers has some success against AJ Brown – BGN
Quinyon Mitchell had some good one-on-one work against DeVonta Smith. After allowing a pass reception in their first lineup against each other, he broke up a pass from Hurts and then had good coverage on the next incomplete pass.

Eagles stocks rise, shares fall after preseason game against Baltimore – NBCSP
CB Quinyon Mitchell. The Eagles’ rookie started Friday and played both fullback and in the slot. He nearly caught an interception pass in the first quarter. Mitchell continues to play a lot in the slot and it seems pretty obvious that the Eagles are grooming him for that role in the season. Although it’s a relatively new position for the rookie, he doesn’t look out of place. It was also telling that Mitchell was out of the game before Kelee Ringo.

Vic Fangio: Slot experiment with Quinyon Mitchell could help put ‘best combination’ of Eagles CBs on the field – Inquirer
Fuel mismanagement aside, Mitchell’s summer has been without many mistakes so far. The former Toledo star has had several good moments in his first training camp despite learning both the nickel cornerback position and the more familiar outside cornerback position in new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s system. Mitchell nearly had an interception in the Eagles’ 16-13 season-opening win over the Baltimore Ravens on Friday when he was the starting outside cornerback in base defense but slid inside into the slot when the Eagles deployed nickel packages. “I thought he did a good job,” Fangio said Sunday. “He played both nickel and outside corner. He’s a good player and he’s going to be a good player, we just have to be careful not to overload him too much. Because nickel is a full-time position, as is corner, and he’s having to learn both right now. And they’re two totally different positions. So we have to constantly monitor that to make sure he’s able to do that.”

PS Games Review – PHI 16, BAL 13 – Iggles Blitz
Kenny Pickett – Not a great performance. Lack of good receivers didn’t help him. Looked good throwing to Calcaterra. Pickett was good on his short throws. They were accurate and looked smooth. Good timing throwing over the middle. Not so good when trying to go down the field. His presence in the pocket could have been better. Tanner McKee – I thought he had more control, but his numbers weren’t good because he didn’t have people getting free and/or catching the ball.

Report: Eagles sign former Broncos safety Caden Sterns – Mile High Report
Sterns is a former fifth-round pick who had a promising rookie year and was expected to make a big jump in year two. Unfortunately, after showing promise again, a hip injury limited him to just 5 games in 2022. He was looking to bounce back in 2023, but a knee injury limited him to just one game. Sterns spent the offseason rehabbing his injury. He was taken off the PUP by the Broncos, but with their safety depth at that position, the team decided it would be best for both of them to part ways. The fact that he failed a fitness test with the Panthers tells us that he may not have been 100% yet and his medicals may have also contributed to them moving on. (…) As for Sterns, he lands with another former defensive coach, Vic Fangio, where he can compete for a spot on the roster of an Eagles secondary that struggled last season. However, he will have to put his injury problems behind him if he wants to return to the performance of his rookie season and the last two seasons before his injuries.

Jerod Mayo doubles down on his plan for Drake Maye against the Eagles – NESN
Drake Maye played just six snaps against the Carolina Panthers in his first training camp for the Patriots, giving him a glimpse of the No. 3 pick. Jerod Mayo assured that Thursday was just one game and Maye would have plenty of time to develop in the upcoming matchups. He reiterated that on Sunday as the Patriots prepared for joint practices and another preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Injuries at the Dallas Cowboys: Tackle Chuma Edoga in the boot after season loss against the Rams – Blogging The Boys
Edoga is potentially the starting left tackle in Week 1, and if not, he’s the team’s primary swing tackle (and that’s in a world where rookie Tyler Guyton displaces him by then). That kind of depth is extremely valuable. The Cowboys’ depth on the offensive line looked a little questionable against the Rams, with Trey Lance facing a lot of pressure. Getting Edoga back will be important to the overall picture of the offensive line.

New York Giants stock rises, stock falls after preseason game – Big Blue View
Drew Lock – The way Lock played Thursday night (4 of 10, 17 yards, one terrible interception and an 8.3 passer rating) gave pause to anyone who thought he was better than Daniel Jones. In fact, I’m sure it makes Tommy DeVito fans wonder why the Giants signed Lock in the first place. Now Lock is injured and the Giants may need to sign another quarterback to get through the preseason. (…) Azeez Ojulari – The 2021 second-round pick has had two injury-plagued seasons. He didn’t seem to fare well in joint practices with the Lions, having just two tackles in 35 snaps (50%) on Thursday. Ojulari also saw Oghoufo, Whitley and Basham play well. The press secretary who constantly called him “Olujari” also lost value.

Commanders vs. Jets (Preseason Game 1) – Stars and Blanks – Hogs Haven
Jayden Daniels – He played very well in limited time. The 42-yard pass he threw to Brown was beautiful. He went 2-3 for 45 yards and had a rushing touchdown in his NFL debut.

Caleb Williams shines in his NFL debut for the Chicago Bears – SB Nation
After sitting out last week’s Hall of Fame Game against the Houston Texans, Caleb Williams made his highly anticipated NFL debut on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. It didn’t take long for the hype surrounding the rookie QB – and first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft – to skyrocket. Williams started for the Chicago Bears against the Bills on Saturday and led his team to two scoring drives in the first quarter. Williams left the game after completing 4 of 7 passes for 95 yards and adding a 13-yard run, while the Bears finished both of his possessions with a field goal.
