Firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire that broke out at 114 Eleventh Street late Sunday morning, authorities said.
The fire, which started in the kitchen at the back of the home, quickly spread upward but was quickly contained. Homeowner Wendy Criss was not home at the time, but her dog Diesel, a recently adopted Labrador mix, was found near the front door by firefighters. They gave Diesel oxygen before veterinarian Martha Hawksworth arrived to treat him. Diesel was later taken to Lakeside Veterinary Services in Montour Falls for further observation.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Criss, who arrived before Diesel left, was able to comfort him before he was transported for further treatment.
