Last season, the Green Bay Packers surprised everyone with an impressive playoff run in their first season without franchise legend Aaron Rodgers. They have the potential to surpass that feat if a trade offer for CeeDee Lamb from the Dallas Cowboys becomes a reality.
The 2023 season marked a significant transition for the Packers as they entered a new era without longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers. After 15 seasons as the team’s starter, Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets in April, clearing the way for 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love to take over as starting QB.
Although the Packers struggled to start the season with a 3-6 record, they fought back in the second half to go 6-2, finish the year 9-8, and secure the final NFC playoff spot. In the Wild Card round, the young Packers team made history by becoming the first 7-seed team to win a playoff game, with a 48-32 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
However, their postseason run ended in the divisional round when they fell to the eventual NFC champion San Francisco 49ers 21-24. This was the fifth time in 11 years that the 49ers had dashed the Packers’ playoff hopes.
Green Bay Packers acquire CeeDee Lamb from the Dallas Cowboys in a stunning trade offer
Although the Packers made some moves in the offseason, including signing Love to a massive contract extension, there is definitely room for improvement. An article by Maurice Moton for Bleacher Report states that Green Bay could sign Lamb for a pair of picks and Christian Watson.
“In exchange for Watson, a 25-year-old wide receiver with great potential, the Packers would get a true No. 1 receiver as the rest of their young pass-catching group continues to improve. They have 22.4 million US dollars of salary cap space this year and $16.4 million for 2025, although the front office can restructure contracts to free up space if needed.
“The Cowboys may not be thrilled with the idea of trading Lamb to the team that knocked them off in the 2023 NFC Wild Card Round, but if they struggle to reach a new contract agreement with him, Dallas could view this offer as the best solution,” Moton wrote.
Lamb led the league in receptions and yards in 2023. However, contract negotiations with the Cowboys have stalled, causing tension between the player and the organization. Lamb’s All-Pro performance and status as a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year put him in position to become one of the highest-paid receivers, but the ongoing contract dispute could complicate his future with the team.
The 2023 season was a transitional year for the Packers, but they showed resilience and potential for the future with their young core led by Love. If the front office pulls off a trade for Lamb, last year’s impressive run can certainly be repeated.
